If you’ve spent any amount of time farming top-tier loot in Borderlands 4, you’ve almost certainly heard other players rave about the Borderlands 4 triple bypass. This legendary shotgun has developed a cult following among endgame players for its absurd damage output and versatility across almost every game mode, but far too many players miss out on its full potential because they don’t understand its unique mechanics. I’ve put over 35 hours of playtime testing this weapon across all characters, Mayhem difficulty levels, and co-op lobbies to break down exactly what makes it special, how to farm it, and how to build your loadout around it to melt even the tankiest bosses.
What Makes the Borderlands 4 Triple Bypass Stand Out From Other Legendary Shotguns
At first glance, the triple bypass looks like a standard high-damage shotgun, but its unique perk set sets it apart from every other shotgun in the current loot pool. The first and most obvious perk is its triple elemental damage proc on every shot, meaning every pellet you fire deals full corrosive, shock, and incendiary damage at the same time, no random roll required. Unlike other multi-element weapons that cut individual element damage by 50% to compensate, the triple bypass keeps full damage values for all three elements, so you’re effectively dealing three times the base damage to most enemies.
Its base stats are nothing to scoff at either, with a 12-pellet spread, 90% accuracy when aimed down sights, 4.2 rounds per second fire rate, and a 1.8 second reload speed. The item card also lists a 25% shield and armor bypass perk, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg for its hidden benefits. I first picked up my first triple bypass during a Maliwan Takedown run on Mayhem 10, and it one-shot a badass load balancer that had been wiping my 4-player party for 10 minutes straight. That’s when I knew I’d found something worth grinding for.
It works just as well for clearing trash mobs as it does for boss fights, which is rare for endgame legendaries that usually specialize in one or the other. You can blow through entire groups of bandits in one shot, and still melt a 10 million health boss in less than 10 seconds with the right build.
Where to Farm the Triple Bypass for the Highest Drop Odds
Like most top-tier Borderlands 4 legendaries, the triple bypass can drop as a random world drop from any legendary enemy, but those odds sit at roughly 0.3% per kill, so farming world enemies is a massive waste of time. There are two dedicated farm spots with far higher drop rates that you can target to get your hands on one in an hour or less of grinding.
The best farm spot by far is the Carnivora Arena secret boss, The Scrapyard Warden, who has a 12% drop chance for the triple bypass on Mayhem 10 or higher. You can unlock this boss by finding three hidden fuel canisters around the Carnivora Arena map and inserting them into the generator behind the prize booth before starting the arena challenge. The boss spawns right after you beat the final wave of the arena, and you can fast travel back to the arena entrance immediately after killing him to reset the run, so each full run only takes 2 to 3 minutes.
If you own the first DLC, Hyperion Secrets of the Core, you can also farm Dr. Neuron, the final boss of the Hyperion Research Facility dungeon, who has an 8% drop rate for the triple bypass. This run takes a bit longer at 5 minutes per clear, but he also drops several other top-tier legendaries, so it’s a good option if you want to farm multiple items at once.
You can boost your drop odds even further with these simple tips:
- Equip a Loot Luck relic with at least 25% increased legendary drop chance before entering the farm area, and make sure it’s not broken before you start your run
- Play on Mayhem 10 or higher, as drop rates for top tier legendaries are 6x higher than lower difficulty levels, and you’ll get better perk rolls on any copies that drop
- Play in a 4-player co-op lobby, even if your friends are just AFK in the starting area, as group loot buffs stack to add an extra 30% drop chance for all players in the lobby
I usually get 1 to 2 copies of the triple bypass every hour when I farm the Scrapyard Warden with these buffs active, which is way faster than any other farm method currently available.
Best Character Builds to Pair With the Triple Bypass
While the triple bypass is viable on every character, some builds get way more value out of its unique perks than others. The top pick by far is Zane, especially if you’re running a shotgun-focused build in his "Double Barrel" skill tree. This skill tree adds 70% extra shotgun damage, reduces recoil by 50%, and lets you dual wield shotguns, so you can fire two triple bypasses at the same time for 6 elemental bursts per trigger pull. I’ve used this build to melt the final raid boss in under 20 seconds on Mayhem 11, which is faster than any other weapon build I’ve tested.
Amara is another great pick, especially if you’re running an elemental hybrid build. Her elemental damage boosts stack with the triple bypass’s inherent elemental damage, and her phase grasp skill lets you group up entire mobs of enemies to hit them with all 12 pellets from one shot. You’ll get an extra 40% damage boost if you run her "Elemental Overload" skill, which activates every time you deal three different elemental types to an enemy, which happens automatically with every shot from the triple bypass.
Fl4k players can also get a lot of value out of this weapon, especially if you’re running a critical hit focused build. The triple bypass has a 2x critical hit multiplier, so Fl4k’s 150% critical damage boost makes aimed down sights shots one-shot almost all common enemies even on the highest difficulty levels. Just make sure you’re running his "Shotgun Master" skill to reduce recoil and increase accuracy for long-range shots.
The only character that doesn’t pair well with the triple bypass is Gaige, if you’re running a high Anarchy build. The Anarchy skill reduces accuracy as you stack kills, and the triple bypass relies on a tight pellet spread to hit all 12 pellets on target to get the full damage output. You can still use it on low Anarchy Gaige builds, but you’ll get far more value out of a high-spread shotgun that doesn’t require perfect accuracy.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using the Triple Bypass
Even though the triple bypass is a fairly straightforward weapon, there are a handful of common mistakes that make players get far less damage out of it than they should. The first and most common mistake is hip firing at targets more than 10 meters away. The hip fire spread is better than most shotguns, but you’ll still lose 60% or more of your damage if you’re firing at targets further than 15 meters, because most of the pellets will miss. Always aim down sights for any target that’s not right in front of you, and you’ll see your damage output skyrocket.
Another common mistake is using generic shotgun damage mods instead of mods that complement the triple bypass’s unique perks. A lot of players run +50% shotgun damage class mods, but you’ll get far more value out of a +30% all elemental damage mod, or a mod that adds extra shield and armor bypass damage. The same goes for your artifact: pick one that boosts all three elemental types instead of just one, and you’ll get a 60% total damage boost instead of 20%.
The biggest mistake most players make, though, is missing out on the weapon’s hidden reload buff. This hidden reload buff is not listed anywhere on the item card, but if you reload exactly after the third burst of your magazine, you’ll get a 40% damage boost for your entire next magazine. I discovered this completely by accident after noticing random damage spikes during boss fights, and confirmed it works after digging through the game’s data files with other modders. It takes a bit of practice to get the timing right, but once you do, you’ll be dealing almost half as much extra damage for free.
The only time you should swap out the triple bypass for another weapon is when you’re fighting enemies that are immune to all three elemental types, like a small number of endgame Eridian bosses. These enemies are extremely rare though, so the triple bypass is still a viable primary weapon for 95% of the game’s content.
At the end of the day, the Borderlands 4 triple bypass is easily one of the top three shotguns in the game right now, and it’s well worth taking an hour out of your playtime to farm and master it. Even if you’re not a big shotgun user, its versatility and damage output make it a great addition to any loadout, whether you’re playing solo or with friends. If you’ve already got a copy of the triple bypass, try out the build tips and hidden perk tricks we covered here, and you’ll be melting entire enemy squads and bosses in seconds. Don’t forget to test out the hidden reload buff first, it’s a total game changer.
